Purl Bee Froggies

Yesterday we posted a link to the Purl Bee pattern for these cute little frogs. We had heaps of fun making them ... and they were so easy - even to hand sew. You could have some real fun making little families of Frogs, and they would be a great project for a junior crafter to enjoy.

We have nearly finished sewing a giant froggie for the shop, so next time you are in store, don't forget to say hello to Maurice [don't you just love making up random names ... ]

Christmas Advent Surprise #7

What a weekend – the shop was full of wonderful friends of Threads yesterday as they convened the final 2009 Coven [our monthly get-together of a group of knitters to meet with Rian Anderson – our ‘white witch’ of knitting to share, learn, knit and knatter] and alongside a group of ladies learning the art of felting with Marion Douglas & to top it off, there were some pretty yummy smells coming from the cafe as Patrick added some fineese to our lunchtime platters with pesto crumbed mushrooms and ‘the works’ burgers – not to mention the preparation of today’s yummy baked treats in homage to Christmas. Which leads me to today’s surprise ... something to whet the appetite both crafty and gastronomic.

December 7: A few months ago we were able to grab a few bolts of some ‘too sweet’ Japanese 100% cotton and 100% linen. Nothing to do with knitting, crochet or felting, but we just couldn’t resist the cute little French girls and lovely little bunny prints – and now we would like to share them with you. Today online and in store we have fat quarters of these beautiful fabrics 10% off, plus if you buy a sampler set of fat quarters you will receive 15% discount .. AND just because we love it, we have grabbed cute free pattern from one of our favourite blogs The Purl Bee for the cutest vintage frog softie to give you inspiration as to what to create with your new fabric. The little frog reminds me of my girl guide days when we made these to complete our sewing badge! I’m making one for each of my boys and also for nieces and nephews [i’ll post the finished froggie family onto the blog just as soon as ...]. This offer is available until midnight on the 8th December 2009.

And to sustain you through all your busy crafting activities this time of year, come visit us in store for some complimentary vanilla shortbread, or, make some yourself using the recipe we found on another of our favourite sites: Nigella Lawson! Happy days!

Our wonderballs have been so popular that we have put up new colourways on the web to tempt and inspire. And don’t worry in the coming days there will be even more Christmas gift ideas for all your crafting needs.

December 6: You asked ‘Santa’ for Noro, so we thought we would help all the Santa’s out there and offer 15% discount on Noro Silk Garden Lite – perfect for knitting through summer in time for wearing Autumn wraps and soft shawls, light weight sweaters and cardi’s. Use it in all your DK/8ply patterns and wonder at the beautiful variegations in colourways that only Noro can achieve. This offer will be available until midnight 7th December 2009 EST.

And the winner is ...

Congratulations Lizla! Our random number generator has resulted in the number 17 being the lucky number - which means comment 17 by Lizla is the winning comment.

Lizla said...
As I can not have the time to knit uninterrupted....I would instead like the mind that could remember which row I completed just before I had to rescue the cat, feed the child, read, cover the cut.......

Many of us here at Threads agree that time is one of the greatest gifts of all! - That and yummy yarn and needles to knit/crochet & craft away the time! ;0)

Lizla - please drop us an email with your contact details and we will have your stash bag shipped immediately shop@threadsandmore.com.au.

Christmas Advent - Surprise #4

December 4: It’s now only three weeks till Christmas – how are your preparations going? Are you stuck for ideas for what to buy the crafters in your life? The next couple of days may well bring you some joy. We have our beautiful wonderballs featured today, and when you purchase online or in store, you will receive a complimentary pattern to knit up a simple yet striking bolero designed by Parisa Roohipour just for us at Threads. We haven’t discounted the Wonderball – we think that at $25 each they are perfect value: what with enough yarn for two scarves, or a wrap or bolero; and then all those trinkets – it really IS the gift that keeps on giving.

The Wonderball: Different yarns of many colours & lengths are hand tied together to create a surprise yarn ball of wool blends, textures, cotton, interlaced with surprises, such as, ribbons; stitch markers; miniature crochet toys; mini pin cushions and other wonderful bits and bobs. Popular in the 1800's, the wonder ball was traditionally given as a gift at Christmas - as the person knit, small trinkets and surprises would fall from the ball. The wonderball embodies the spirit of giving, as the gift continues to reveal presents and the knitter produces a lasting gift of either a scarf or wrap.

Weird Places T&M Has Been Advertised...

We're asking all our loyal shoppers to comment on this post with stories about Threads and More coming up in unexpected conversations or places, the weirder and more original the better!

We were inspired to start this particular post after a Sunday knitter confessed to having started talking about Threads and More to a complete stranger while standing in line for the toilet at a Andre Rieu concert! She realised someone was touching the hand-knit shawl she had wrapped round her shoulders and, friendly people that crafters are, struck up a conversation about knitting and her local yarn store. Inspiring stuff!

I definitely can't cope with the commute to work in the morning without my trusty handbag-sizes knitting project, and have started some great conversations with fellow commuters about the revival of crafting, and the wonder of being able to turn a heel on four needles.

Can't wait to hear about your conversation starters...

GOOD ON YOU CATE!
OSCAR-winning actor Cate Blanchett has been nick-named Cate Blanket after stepping out in a colourful crochet patchwork dress to open Screen Worlds at ACMI in Melbourne last week.
"Cate is a real supporter of avant garde fashion ... let's face it, she would look good in a tea cosy or a toilet roll. Designer and Project Runway Australia mentor Henry Roth gave Blanchett a "gold star" for being imaginative and different. "I love the play of texture with this one-shoulder red-carpet silhouette, featuring hem, bodice and sleeve flounces that was all over the New York runways," Roth said
Those wanting to buy their own Blanchett blanket dress look are out of luck, however. Ms Plunkett said yesterday that the piece was a one-off dress created for their Australian Fashion Week show earlier this year and it would not be going into production.
extract from www.news.com.au

However at Threads & More, why not join one of our many Crochet classes and we can help you learn the Granny square used to create this dress.
Happy Knitting, the Threads and More team. x

We Made The Papers!

Threads & More is featured in the latest issue of the Brisbane News Magazine "Craft Counsel issue". The article concentrates on the creative revival happening across Brisbane and features a photo of our very own Lynda and Ann happily crafting! As well as exploring the rise of craft sites and forums online, the article talks about social crafting and describes Threads and More as a 'hub of genuine creativity' for local crafters. High praise indeed!

"Craft gives you an impetus to connect with a group", explains Alix. "If you enjoy it, you want to share, so you seek out ways to do that."

And we certainly do that at Threads and More. With crafters of all kinds coming together on Wednesdays and Saturdays to hang out, have a cup of tea and, most importantly, create, we are proud to have such an active community here. Thanks to all our crafty friends for your support and are always eager for new members!

Congratulations also to Shannon Deutrom of Milk and Honey and Samantha Jockel of Biddy Bags, who are also featured in the article.
